We are proud to have received accreditation by the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) to perform first, second and third trimester obstetrical ultrasounds and gynecological ultrasounds. We achieved this recognition by meeting rigorous voluntary guidelines set by the diagnostic ultrasound profession.

AIUM accreditation is the hallmark of an ultrasound practice that meets nationally standards of patient care. Practices accredited by the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) have demonstrated competency in every aspect of their operation, including:

What are pelvic ultrasounds?

Ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves which pass through the skin and are reflected off the organs to create a picture on a screen with the help of a computer.  A pelvic ultrasound scan can be performed in two ways: abdominally or vaginally.

What type of ultrasounds do we perform?

• Gynecological Ultrasounds
• Obstetrical Ultrasounds
• Pelvic or Transvaginal Ultrasound

What is the purpose of ultrasound?

• To monitor the development of your baby during prenatal care
• To determine the size, shape and position of organs in the pelvic region
• To evaluate pain, abnormal bleeding, or other menstrual problems in women
• To detect abnormalities affecting the ovaries and uterus, such as fibroid tumors (these are non-cancerous), masses abscesses, cysts and inflammation.
• To evaluate infertility problems
• To monitor follicle development in the ovaries of an infertility patient

What are obstetrical ultrasounds?

Obstetrical Ultrasounds are performed to monitor the health and development of the fetus and placenta in pregnant women, and to detect problems such as ectopic (tubal) pregnancy. Transvaginal ultrasound is more often used early in pregnancy and pelvic ultrasound later in pregnancy.

What are gynecologic ultrasounds?

From the gynecological point of view, there are many conditions that can produce pelvic pain, such as

• Endometriosis
• Ovarian cysts
• Ovarian tumors
• Uterine tumors
• Irregular menses
• Moderate or severe pain during your menstrual period

With an ultrasound, your doctor can combine his/her medical expertise with accurate visual information allowing him/her to make a more precise diagnosis and therefore a better course of treatment. 

Ultrasounds are also recommended if you have a history of infertility (trying to conceive without success), if you feel pain during sexual intercourse, if you are having post-menopausal bleeding, or family history of ovarian cancer.

Are ultrasounds safe?

Ultrasound imaging is considered safe when performed by appropriately trained health care providers for medically necessary examinations.

Does this office perform 3D/4D ultrasound examinations?
Yes. We do perform these exams as keepsakes, but keep in mind that these types of ultrasound examinations are not medically indicated and are not covered by insurance.  Learn more about our 3D/4D ultrasound packages here.

How long do ultrasound exams take?

Depending on your anatomy and the time it takes for the sonographer to take appropriate measurements of your pelvic organs, an examination can take approximately 15-20 minutes.

Are ultrasounds only for pregnant

No. Even if you are not pregnant, you can benefit from the technology behind sonography since it will allow your doctor to check for several things, for example, if you have any masses in your reproductive system, if your intrauterine device is well-placed, or why you are experiencing pelvic pain.

How will I learn the results?

Ultrasound reports are provided at the appointment directly following your ultrasound scan.  You will also receive a more in-depth report on your personalized patient portal account here.

Can I drive home?

Yes, there are no known side-effects from this procedure.
