Breast density is a topic that’s rarely discussed—yet it plays a significant role in cancer detection and long-term breast health. At Women’s Excellence, we aim to empower our patients with knowledge that can guide informed choices about screenings and care.
What Is Breast Density? Breast density refers to the amount of fibrous and glandular tissue compared to fatty tissue in the breast. It’s determined by mammography and is categorized into four levels: almost entirely fatty, scattered density, heterogeneously dense, and extremely dense.
Why Does Density Matter? Dense breast tissue can make it more difficult to detect abnormalities on imaging. It can also slightly increase a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer. This means women with dense breasts may need personalized screening recommendations—including additional imaging or earlier screening schedules.
At Women’s Excellence, we don’t perform mammograms, but we play a vital role in:
- Educating patients on what dense breasts mean
- Reviewing personal and family history for risk factors
- Coordinating care and referrals for imaging or breast specialists when needed
We encourage every woman to ask questions about her breast density and what it means for her ongoing wellness plan. Knowledge truly is power—and in this case, it can save lives.
