How Does Liletta IUD Work? - Women's Excellence

There are so many options for contraception, it can get overwhelming to decide which one is right for you. If you are not wanting to have a baby for at least a year, have a hard time remembering to take a pill every day, or have very heavy periods, a hormonal intrauterine device (IUD), like the Liletta device, may be right for you.

A Liletta is a small plastic T shaped device that is inserted into your uterus. It releases a steady low dose of progesterone, a hormone, which helps to prevent pregnancy while it is in place. The Liletta can be left in place for up to 5 years, but can be removed any time you are ready. The device works by thinning the lining of your uterus which helps prevent a fertilized egg from attaching (leading to a pregnancy) and also causes your period to become much lighter (sometimes even stop all together!).

The IUD insertion is an office procedure similar to getting a pap smear. It is best to schedule your insertion while you are on your period if possible, as your cervix opens slightly during this time and can make placement easier. The placement can be somewhat crampy so we recommend taking 600mg of Motrin about an hour before your procedure. The entire process takes about 10 minutes.

After having a Liletta placed, there will be strings that are attached to the device that are trimmed to remain outside your uterus, allowing us to remove the device when it is time. You may be able to feel these strings, and I would encourage you to do so every so often to make sure the Liletta is still where it is supposed to be.

Overall, an IUD like the Liletta is a great option for contraception for busy people who don’t want to have to worry about forgetting to take their birth control. Schedule an appointment with one of our providers today to discuss if a Liletta is the right choice for you!
