How to Perform a Breast Self-Exam (And When to Call Your Doctor) - Women's Excellence

Performing monthly breast self-exams is a powerful way for women to become familiar with their bodies and potentially catch early warning signs of breast cancer. At Women’s Excellence, we believe that education is key to empowering women to take charge of their health.

The best time to perform a breast self-exam is about 3–5 days after your period ends, when breast tissue is less swollen or tender. If you’re no longer menstruating, choose a consistent day each month.

Step-by-Step Breast Self-Exam:

  1. Look in the mirror. With arms at your sides, then raised overhead, examine your breasts for visual changes in shape, contour, or skin texture. Look for dimpling, puckering, or nipple changes.
  2. Feel your breasts while lying down. Use the pads of your fingers to move in small, circular motions, covering your entire breast from collarbone to under the breast and from your armpit to cleavage. Apply light, medium, and firm pressure.
  3. Repeat the exam standing up. Many women find it easiest to do this in the shower.

Common concerns to report to your provider include a new lump, nipple discharge, persistent pain, or skin changes. While not all lumps are cancerous, prompt evaluation provides peace of mind and early intervention when necessary.

Our team is here to help you understand what’s normal for your body, provide education on breast health, and refer for imaging or specialist evaluation when needed.
