Stop Spreading the Flu With This Simple Trick

By: Women’s Excellence in Obstetrics and Gynecology

Flu season is around the corner and it’s time for helpful flu prevention tricks.  One of the most important ways to avoid getting or spreading the flu or other illnesses is by properly washing your hands.  Although it may seem like a “no-brainer”, 97% of Americans do not properly wash their hands, according to a study conducted by the USDA.  The USDA found 2 critical errors in hand-washing: not washing hands for long enough or using a dirty towel when drying hands.

We’ve put together a quick reference on hand-washing provided by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

When Should You Wash Your Hands?

  • Before, during, and after touching and preparing food
  • Before every meal or snack
  • Immediately after using the bathroom or changing a diaper
  • After coming in contact with someone who is ill
  • Whenever you clean and bandage a wound
  • Immediately after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing
  • After petting an animal (even your own!) or handling pet food or treats
  • After touching garbage or any other unsanitary item

Proper Hand-washing Techniques

  • It is important to wash your hands for AT LEAST 20 seconds. A general rule of thumb is to sing “Happy Birthday” to yourself twice.
  • Be sure to use clean, running water when wetting your hands.
  • Apply soap and thoroughly lather your hands. Don’t forget the back of your hands, in-between fingers, and underneath finger nails.
  • After 20 seconds, rinse your hands with clean water.
  • An important, yet often overlooked step: Dry your hands using paper towel or a hand towel that has not been used more than 3 times. Bacteria and germs can build up on these towels.

Hand-Washing Alternatives

Don’t have access to clean water and soap?  An alcohol-based hand-sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol is your best go-to until you can properly wash your hands.
