Combating Barriers to Care for Women With Endometriosis - Women's Excellence

Endometriosis is a condition in which tissue similar to the cells of the lining of the uterus (endometrium) grows in other areas of the body.  With symptoms like infertility, chronic pelvic pain, painful periods, painful sex, back pain, and intestinal problems, endometriosis can negatively affect all aspects of a woman’s daily life, including her physical and emotional well-being and productivity.  Dr. Jonathan Zaidan, MD, FACOG, President of Women’s Excellence and his team are dedicated to educating and treating women with endometriosis and complex pelvic pain.

Symptoms of endometriosis are often confused with typical menstrual cycle symptoms, which contributes to delays in receiving a proper diagnosis.  On average, women with endometriosis experience delays of 7 to 12 years from the time they first experience symptoms.

“Endometriosis is not a new disease.  Despite the significant burden this disease has on women, there is still confusion and misunderstanding surrounding endometriosis,” says Zaidan.  “And as a result, many women do not have access to quality care and appropriate treatment measures”.

As part of their commitment to women’s healthcare, Women’s Excellence advocates for endometriosis education, access to quality care, and advanced treatment protocols in the following ways:

  1. Telemedicine/Virtual Care visits with expert endometriosis providers
  2. Community education through a women’s health podcast, blogs, and social media.  The women’s health podcast and blog can be found at www.WomensExcellence.com
  3. Excision of endometriosis through minimally invasive robotic techniques to preserve fertility

Women’s Excellence uses the latest and newest treatment protocols in dealing with the symptoms of endometriosis. In the past, a total hysterectomy, including the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries, was thought to be the only effective treatment for the condition. Today, there are now minimally invasive ways to treat the disease and protect a woman’s fertility, excision utilizing the Da Vinci Robotic system. With excision, the lesions are removed and destroyed all the way down to the roots, not leaving any damaged tissue behind.  Excision also helps maintain healthy tissue in the surrounding organs.  Once the damaged tissue is removed, the specimens are sent to pathology to rule out cancer and determine the extent of the disease.
