What is menopause?

Menopause is a point in time 12 months after a woman’s last period. Menopause occurs when your ovaries eventually stop releasing eggs, meaning that you will no longer have periods or be able to get pregnant.  During the transition into Menopause, called perimenopause, a woman experiences a variety of symptoms has her hormone levels are changing.

What causes hot flashes?

Hot flashes are caused by changes in your reproductive hormone levels during perimenopause and fluctuations in your hypothalamus.  Additionally, a sudden onset of a hot flash may occur due to hot weather, alcohol, spicy food, and caffeine.

When will menopause happen?

Most women typically notice irregularities in their menstrual cycle beginning in their 40s.  The average age that most women have their last menstrual period is at the age of 52. Women can also experience menopause due to surgical procedures, like a hysterectomy.
